The 8th Geopark Global UNESCO Conference at Adamello Brenta Geopark Italy

The 8th Global Geopark UNESCO Conference in 2018 was held at Adamello Brenta Geopark Italia on September 8-14 2018. Located in a small town called Madonna di Campiglio, this international event was attended by 64 countries from all over the world. This International Conference not only contains scientific sessions, but also a series of events such as the annual meeting of UNESCO Global Geopark Executive Members, the European Geopark Network, the Asia-Pacific Geopark Network, Exhibitions (Geo-Fair), Workshops, Gala Dinner, and Fieldtrips.

The main event was opened by the Executive President of UGG, Prof. Nickolas Zouros, then continued with opening remarks by Prof. Patrick McKeever as Secretary of the UNESCO International Geoscience and Geoparks Program. Chairman of the AUDI Car Company, Dr. Fabrizio Longo also gave opening remarks.

Scientific Sessions are divided into two categories: oral sessions and posters. More than 200 abstracts were presented at the oral session and in the poster session there were more than 100 abstracts on display. Geopark Ciletuh-Palabuhanratu also succeeded in participating in the scientific session by presenting a speaker at the oral session and three speakers at the poster session. The delegates successfully presented the results of their research with an enthusiastic response from listeners.

At the exhibition session or GeoFair, the Geopark Indonesia stand always seemed to be filled with visitors from various countries. They seem curious about Indonesia and always ask something to Indonesian delegation. This exhibition also looks interesting because it presents local works such as Miniature of Leuit and Vespa from banana midribs, puppets, and other typical products. In addition, visitors can also find out more information by reading leaflets and booklets that can be obtained for free.

On the third day, the conference participants were invited to take a field trip to the selected geotourism routes. This geotourism pathway has its own theme and level of difficulty. Like the Dolomiti Trip, participants were invited to see the splendor of dolomite rocks and landscapes at an altitude of 2400 masl. The Val di Fumo line which presents valley landscapes results from glacial and igneous rock outcrops of tonalite. There are also several Cultural Trails such as the Thun-Thovel and Muse-Trento City where participants can see cultural heritage in the castle and museum.

At the Gala Dinner, the new Global Geopark Network members were announced, namely 8 new UGG were set in 2018. Geopark Rinjadi and Ciletuh-Palabuhanratu are two representatives of Indonesia’s geopark who have officially become members of the GGN, following the two previous geopark namely Mount Batur and Gunung Sewu.

The conference was closed by a presentation from award-winning geopark from Spain, China and the host Adamello Brenta Geopark. Then offerings from the Trentino disability association for conference participants. The most awaited thing is the announcement of the prospective host of the next UGG conference also delivered at the end of the event. Jeju Geopark, Korea finally won the trust to host the 9th UGG conference which will be held in 2020.
