Belitung, an island whose name skyrocketed through the movie “Laskar Pelangi”, held a geopark themed festival. The event, December 9 – 11, 2016 filled with a variety of activities related to the geopark. Geopark in principle is the concept of sustainable utilization of resources geodiversity, biodiversity, and culturaldiversity. Based on the above background, to expand the network of geopark national, as well as preparing Belitong Island as a candidate geopark national towards geopark global (Belitong Island UGG) in 2019 or 2020, the Geopark is a management concept development of the region which have significant influence regional scale for conservation, education and improving people’s welfare.
Geopark Festival also presents Assessor UGG Belitong of Langkawi Geopark Professor Mohammad Shafeea Leman, officials of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Deputy Minister of Tourism, observers of national geopark, perpetrator of tourism, to home industry. Chairman of the Geopark Belitong Erowati Dyah said two important things that must be considered in the proposal Belitong Geopark. Both of these is the Human Resources (HR) and management and institutional management. Otherwise, the geopark status would be difficult to achieve Belitong.

As part of the festival, Alumni ITB ’81 Foundaation and Local Government related cooperation, and various stakeholders, supported by the central government, initiated a national geopark seminar entitled “Seminar on Belitung Island National Geopark”, with the theme “Geopark for Tourism”. The purpose of this seminar is the increase of tourist visits and the development of new tourist destinations, green tourism, and the performance of tourism-related through the strengthening of the geopark and raising the strength and synergies of mutual benefit from a range of partners, including the Government, Academia, Business World, Community, Media, and more while the purpose of the seminar is to gain and expansion strategy geopark networks to increase the number of national geopark and global geopark (UGG: UNESCO Global Geoparks) in Indonesia to carry out its function as a means of conservation, education and the local economy based grower Geotourism.
On this occasion, Prof. Ir. Mega Fatimah Rosana, M.Sc, Ph.D as head of the Research Center of Geopark and Geological Hazards – Universitas Padjadjaran, explained in detail about the things that need to be prepared by the geopark candidate and important aspects that must be considered in the development of geopark, with sample preparation of Ciletuh-Palabuhanratu National Geopark.
