The program “Geopark to School. School to Geopark “is a program implemented by Ciletuh-Palabuhanratu National Geopark Management, in cooperation with Education Board of Sukabumi District and West Java Province. This program is an invitation to schools in the area geopark to conduct educational activities such as fieldtrips or study tours in the geosite of Ciletuh-Palabuhanratu National Geopark region. Currently, many schools from elementary, junior high, and high school or equivalent which has been fulfilling the program.
On Thursday, February 16th, 2017, the teachers and administration staffs of SMPN 2 Simpenan held a field trip to geosite in Ciemas Subdistrict. On that occasion the geological interpreter of the Management Board were asked to share knowledge about the geopark. Things were presented, among others: Geopark concepts and history, characteristics of Ciletuh-Palabuhanratu National Geopark, potentials that can be developed within the geopark, and basic geology.
At the sharing session, Mr. Hidayat, as Principal of SMPN 2 Simpenan said that now the students are very interested in learning about the geopark and its aspects, especially after knowing the Simpenan Subdistrict is also included in the Geopark area after the expansion of the region. However, there are some complaints of the teachers which are the lack of educational or instructional materials regarding geopark that belongs to each school, so teachers have difficulty in presenting the material. He said that teaching materials will greatly assist teachers in classroom, besides teachers can also develop geopark material in certain subjects to be integrated.
Currently the Ciletuh-Palabuhanratu National Geopark already has some educational and teaching materials as well as geopark promotional material in the form of printing media, such as books, booklets, leaflets and information boards of geosites. In addition, educational materials in digital form may also be obtained on the official website of the National Geopark Ciletuh-Palabuhanratu. However, the amount printing media distribution is still lacking, because not all schools or educational institutions have them.
Therefore, Mr. Hidayat asked for the Management Board in order to provide the educational and teaching materials to schools so that teachers can teach well. He also hopes the school will also be able to play an active role in the socialization to parents and the community around the school site.
